BookNest — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 16 August 2026

Summary

BookNest is designed to be private by default. Your family's reading data stays on your device. We do not have an account system, we do not run a server that receives your data, and reader names, books, notes, quotes, and reading logs are never sent to a BookNest backend — because BookNest has no backend for reading data. BookNest shows ads via Google AdMob to help keep the app free; the sections below explain exactly what that means and what consent choices are available to you.

What data BookNest stores

BookNest stores the information you enter — reader names (which are simply local labels you choose), books, reading sessions (minutes and pages), goals, streaks, badges, notes, ratings, and quotes — locally on your device only. This data is never transmitted to us or to any third party, and is never used for advertising.

Data collection by BookNest

BookNest itself does not collect any data. Specifically:

Advertising (Google AdMob)

BookNest shows a small number of ads, in a single secondary location (the Family Reading Resources screen), using Google AdMob and the Google Mobile Ads SDK. This is separate from your reading data — your books, reader names, notes, quotes, and reading logs are never shared with AdMob or any ad partner.

The Google Mobile Ads SDK may process ad-related data (such as approximate ad request/device information) to serve and measure ads, under Google's own privacy policies. BookNest does not request Apple's App Tracking Transparency permission and does not use the advertising identifier (IDFA), so ads are served non-personalized rather than tracking you across apps.

Where required by law (for example, for users in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland), BookNest shows a consent form, using Google's User Messaging Platform (UMP), before requesting ads, and lets you change your choice at any time from the app's privacy settings.

Children's privacy

BookNest can be used to log children's reading. “Readers” are local profiles — labels and a color you choose on the device. This information is stored only on your device and is never collected by us or sent anywhere. BookNest does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children, and does not direct ad requests at children.

Notifications

If you turn on daily reading reminders, BookNest schedules local notifications on your device. These are handled entirely by iOS on the device and are not sent through any server. Reminders are optional, local-only, and can be turned off at any time in Settings.

Backups

You can export a backup file of your data and choose to share or store it yourself. Exported files are created on your device and are only shared if you deliberately share them. We do not receive backup files.

External links and resources

BookNest includes optional links to external websites — Classeem (printable worksheets and classroom resources) and a Family Reading Resources page with further editorial picks. Selecting any of these opens an external website in your browser; the BookNest app itself makes no network requests to load them. Some resource links may be affiliate links, meaning BookNest may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Those external websites are operated separately and have their own privacy practices.

Data retention and deletion

Because your reading data is stored only on your device, you are in full control of it. You can delete individual items in the app, or remove all data at once using “Delete all data” in Settings. Deleting the app removes its data from your device.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above.
